Thanks Bringing : Tithing The Tithe
If you talk to most people today it seems one of the biggest challenges they are currently facing is finances. A few weeks ago, I saw a Newspaper headline that said that many South Africans are using credit cards to buy food. People are using credit to just survive, to just buy groceries. I think we have a problem. Yet every time money is mentioned in the church, people say; Pastor we talk too much about money, visitors will say, oh it is one of those churches that talk about money. He is probably one of those prosperity preachers; you need to watch out for the prosperity gospel. Just for your information, there is no such thing as a prosperity gospel, it is only the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but the gospel of Jesus Christ brings about prosperity in people’s lives.
I know there are people out there that are trying to steal from you, but this is your church, this is your family, we are not trying to steal from you, we want to teach you God’s Word so that you can prosper God’s way.The Bible says that if one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers, we want all our members to be the most blessed people in the Vaal Triangle and South Africa. There is so much we as a church need to do in the Vaal, South Africa and the world, and it is going to require that we are all so blessed that we can be a blessing to our community, our country and the world.
So if you are visiting us, we are not after your money. I have been in this church for more than 20 Years and never, has anyone, taken a gun, held it against someone’s head and said, give me your money. We don’t manipulate for money, but we need to tell you the truth about finances from God’s Word. So never forget we give in this church because we love God, for no other reason.
So this morning please listen as I talk to you about your finances, I believe what I am about to share with you is important, because first of all, I believe God wants me to share this with you today. I asked God to confirm that this is the message He wanted me to share this morning, I asked Him to to do something supernatural financially. Yesterday morning, my wife and I was having breakfast at restaurant, and we saw someone we knew there, we greeted them, and then when they left, they put R400 on our table.
I am not saying this to you to be braggadocious, but to say to you this is God’s word for you today. I believe God has an appointment with the people that are here today, and if you will practice the principles I am about to share with you, something supernatural will happen in your finances. If we will practice it in our lives next year, I believe will next year have one of the greatest years financially we have ever had before.
This week, God started dealing with me, with regards to prosperity. I felt in my heart that 2019 is going to be one of the most prosperous years for children of God yet, but also that in the world things are going to get worse. What God wants me to share with you this morning, will protect and safeguard us from what is going to happen in the world, and to take us higher level than we have ever been. Now please hear me, I haven’t arrived in the area of finances yet, but praise God I am not where I used to be.
So in saying that, how many of you would like things to go well in your finances? I declare this morning to all of you, so you can hear it, God wants us to Prosper and be rich. You heard me correctly. I said rich. How many of you would like to Prosper and be rich? Rich and Prosperity is not a dirty word. Yet if we want to experience God’s riches and prosperity, we need to stop looking to the world and its ways to provide for us, the world doesn’t have the answers. God has a higher and a better way. So forget this morning about everything you have heard from the world and from unbelieving believers and let’s today just look at what the Word of God teaches about prosperity and about how we should prosper.
Like I said, the world doesn’t have the answer. Economies are failing, there is recessions, depressions, inflation, the price of everything in the world is going up, and listen it is not going to get better, yet,it is always amazing to me, how we will always listen to the world’s ways, but when we talk about God’s ways peoples defenses go up.
Investment Gurus tell us there is this great investment opportunity and because it is an ‘’expert’’ we jump into it, we watch the news and watch the economy, read our newspapers and yet the more people know, the more they seem to be stressed and anxious and worried. I am all in for making wise financial decisions, but it seems that when it comes to money, we say God, I have got this, you take care of the spiritual side, I will take care of my money. Let me ask you this morning: ‘’ How is that working out for you?’’ We have to decide who we will trust when it comes to our finances and lives, the world or God’s Word, God’s system or the world system? I think it is time that believers listen to the Word and stop listening to the world. Why not let God teach us? So this morning I want to talk about, thanks bringing, tithing the Tithe.
Now Prosperity is much more than just the Tithe, but we have to start somewhere. The tithe is probably one of the most misunderstood principles in the body of Christ. How do I know this? People fight about it, believers are constantly arguing about it, wondering if it is still valid for today, and also I wonder how many people really still practice tithing the tithe. I don’t know where you stand on all of this, but know that I am not here to judge you or to condemn you this morning; I want to help you.
Tithing is a Biblical Principle. It is also not just a principle but a way of how God wants to get His blessing to flow in our lives, and very importantly it is also a way we express our thanks for the blessing of God. As I studied this I went to the first place in the Bible where someone brought God an offering and it was just after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 4:1-5 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.”2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
- Text Verse
Genesis 14: 19, 20 NKJV 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering but He did not respect Cain and his offering.
There is a principle in Bible Interpretation, called the law of first mention. Every time something is mentioned for the first time in the Bible, there is significance to it and there are principles for us to learn. This is the first time; someone brought a first fruit to God in the Bible. Cain worked in the land, and he brought an offering of the land, Abel worked with sheep and he brought sheep.Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground, but Abel brought the firstborn. Cain gave any offering, Abel brought his first and the Bible says God respected Abel and His offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. The word there respect simply means look upon it. God looked with favor at Abel’s offering but looked away in disfavor from Cain’s offering. Why??? I believe one of the the principles in this passage is that God wants to be first in our lives. He wants to be first in your marriage, in your family, in your work, and also first in our finances. So the question this morning is, is God first in your life, is He first in your finances? You may say yes, but how do we practically put God first in our finances?
- What does it mean when God is first
Firstly, when God is first, it means we give Him our first and we give him our best. We don’t give God what is left, we give him our best. Many people today give God there left overs. I am not talking about just finances. People say, if I have time, I will come to church, if I have time I will go to cell. If I have time I will pray, if I have time I will study my Bible. If I have money left over after I have paid my bills, I will tithe.
God does not want our leftovers. He wants to be first. You see many people try to do things there way and then expect God to bless it. It is like the person who prays, God forgive me for the thing I am about to do. They know it’s wrong, but instead of listening to God before they the wrong thing, they say, it is easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission. The problem with that attitude is that God has a way of doing things. That is what makes Him God. Whenever we do things our way, we are trying to be God, and once again, let me ask, how has that worked out for you? When we don’t put God first in our marriages, they fail, when we don’t put God first in our families, we have houses and not homes, when we don’t put God first in our finances, we struggle. God has a way of blessing us and we have to follow His way, and if we say God is first in our lives we have to follow His ways. One of my favourite quotes is, if we keep on doing the same thing and expect different results it is called insanity. We have tried the world’s way, maybe it is time to believe like children and do things God way. How many of us can truly say we did it and are doing things God’s way and not what Frank Sinatra said in his song: I did it my way….
So let me try to explain to you some of God’s way of blessing us in our finances. Now very important, God doesn’t bless us because we do something, He blesses us because of the blood of Jesus. The currency of heaven is not money, but the blood of Jesus. The Blood of Jesus has paid for your salvation, your healing, your prosperity and everything that is in your life. However we need to honor the principles in God’s Word, to activate the blessing of God in our lives. How does God bless us? God’s way of blessing us financially comes through giving. Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. Many people use that verse as an excuse not to give, when it should be the reason that we give. Givers are always more blessed than receivers. When you receive something it is your harvest, if you just consume your harvest, you have nothing left, when you give, you sow seed, which will result in more harvest. It is more blessed to give than to receive. So are you a giver? God loves a cheerful giver.
There are four types of Giving in the Bible and I want to give them all to you this morning, so that you have an overview but we will focus on the Tithe more today. So here they are:
There are four types of giving in the Bible:
- Tithe– Your 10% that which belongs to the Lord, Motivation is Obedience- Living under an open heaven, God rebukes the devourer for your sake. It connects you to the Blessing
Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it
First Fruits, Our first increase of the year – Motivation is Generosity. Show God that money does not rule you.
Proverbs 3:9 NKJV – Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase
Alms Giving, Compassionate giving – Motivation is Compassion.Help the poor. 98% of people’s giving is alms.
Proverbs 19:17 NKJV – He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given
Seed Giving – Investing and watching the Lord return your investment 30/60/100-fold, Motivation is Faith and Reward.
Mark 4:20 KJV And these are they which are sown on good ground, such as hear the Word and receive it and bring forth fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.
2 Corinthian 9:6 NIV remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
- The Tithe
So let’s take a look at the Tithe. This is one of the best known verses on the tithe.
Malachi 3:8-12 (NKJV)8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. 11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the Lord of hosts; 12 “And all nations will call you blessed, For you will be a delightful land,” Says the Lord of hosts.
The Tithe Is A Divine Connector To The Blessing. What Blessing? What Is The Blessing?
Genesis 1:28 (NKJV) Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
The blessing is when we are fruitful, and we are always producing, when we are multiplying, and we are always increasing. When we replenish, we always fill and refill and when we subdue. Subdue means to put things down. We have to control our environment or our environment will control us. If we are having a hard time in the recession, we need to quit living on the Babylonian System.Recession, depression is all part of the Babylonian system. It is the world’s way of finances. We have to learn how to live in the Blessed System. How? The Tithe! Tithing is a way for the recession or depression to bypass us.Why? Because You Live On An Open Window Of Heaven! When we live in the blessing we are blessed in the city, blessed in the fields, blessed in the fruit of your body, blessed going in, blessed coming out. When we Tithe God promises to rebuke the devourer for your sake and open over us the windows of heaven and pour out the blessing. The blessing is an empowerment to prosper; the curse is an empowerment to fail. You would rather have 90% of your income blessed, empowered to prosper, than to have 100% of it cursed, empowered to fail. Now don’t misunderstand me, there is a teaching that says that if you don’t tithe, God will curse you. That is not true. This curse didn’t come from God. When Adam sinned, the ground was cursed. This is where the curse came from. When Cain killed Abel, God said that the ground cursed Cain. He didn’t say “I curse you” so the curse doesn’t come from God. We need to recognize that there is a curse on the earth and when we receive something such as money which is from the ground or earth; it is tainted with the curse. The good news is that God can sanctify or set it apart it by a principle called tithing. The tithe is basically a tenth, the first 10%. The giving of the tenth is a consistent principle in the bible. If 10% is given to the Lord, the rest of the 90% is made holy by Him. When something is made holy, it is set apart, the Devil cannot touch it, let alone steal it. It is set apart. This is God’s grace towards us. When we give Him 10%, He sanctifies and sets apart the 90% and it goes a long way, further than the 100% ever could, it is supernatural.
Romans 11:16.16 NKJV If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.
Satan wants to put you us in a position where we say or think, that we can’t afford to tithe, if he gets us to say or believe that Satan has legal right to curse our finances. But our motivation for tithing is not fear of the curse; our motive should be obedience to His word, because that is what tithing is all about. It’s a divine connector. It connects us to the blessing. This is one of the first things of giving and how God wants to bless us, this is God’s way, and this is where we should start. It starts with the Tithe. I don’t know what your stance or thinking is on Tithing, or has been I believe today can be a new day for us.
- A New beginning
I believe God wants to give us a new beginning in our finances. It will start by us, recommitting to the Tithe in our lives. Many people don’t tithe, some have never tithed, they didn’t know, others tithed in the past but said this is not working for me, others are still tithing but they have lost the revelation of tithing and tithe the wrong way. Tithing should always be done as a revelation, not an obligation. We don’t have to tithe, we get to tithe. Tithe is our covenant, blessing connecter. So I want to share some revelation on Tithing with you that trust will bless you. I want to share with you some prosperity secrets from Hebrew letters in the Bible. Tithing is one of the best kept secrets in the Bible. You know that our Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and I believe God chose it because there is so much that can be revealed to us through the Hebrew language. Now revelation is always hidden for us and not from us, God wants you to have revelation, because when you have revelation, it transforms your life. I believe this revelation this morning will transform your thinking about tithing and it will bless and change your life. You remember the principle I stated in the beginning, that we saw with Cain and Abel that God wants to be first in our lives. Tithing is not about the money, it shows that God is first in our finances. So let me show you something from the beginning of beginnings, so we can have a new beginning, amen.
In Genesis 1:1 We read, in the beginning, that is the Hebrew Word,Breeshiyt, Hebrew reads from right to left, remember and it is made up of the Hebrew letters, Beth, Resh, Shin, Ayin, Yod, Tav. When we take the first two letters of these words, it spells son. Beth+Resh=Son. Even in the beginning of our Bible it starts with the Son. It is all about the son, Jesus. When we take the next three letters: Resh+Shin+Ayin= Leader/ Head. Then the last two letters, is the yod, which is the hand and tav, which represents the cross= The Power of the hand and the cross. When you put all of this together, from the very first word in the Bible, it teaches us,when we put the Son of God first, make Him the leader or the head of our lives, and receive the power of the cross in our lives, we will have a new beginning. How many of you would like a new beginning in your finances? Here is a secret. When we remove the letter Beth, the first letter, Beerishiyt becomes the Hebrew word, reeshiyt, which means first fruit. Ok so listen carefully, the first letter Beth means house. Like Bethlehem, means house of bread, Bethel means house of El- Beth (House) El, God. When we take the first two letters which are Beth, Resh, remember it means Son; something amazing is revealed, when we bring the first fruit to the House of the Son (the Church, which is the Body of Christ), we will have a new beginning in our finances. Bringing the tithe to Jesus, to the storehouse, can transform our finances.
Something amazing about the word tithe, in Hebrew it is the Word “maaser.” If you remove the first letter, you get “aaser” which means “rich” in Hebrew. God hid the word rich; wealth in the tithe, wealth is in the tithe. You want to be rich and wealthy it starts with the tithe. Also Jacob’s son’s name was also Asar, which is a kindred word of Aaser, which means happy, so when we tithe, or Maaser we have happy riches, not sad riches, happy riches, or wealth is in the tithe.
Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.
So if you need a new beginning in your finances God’s way, it is going to start with having a revelation of the Tithe. So remember we talked about the law of first mention, the first time we read about something in the Bible God is revealing important principles to us. The first time the word rich and tithing is mentioned in the Bible is in the following story. Coincidently it is when Abraham brought his tithe.
Genesis 14:18-23 NKJV)“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all. Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’—”
Abraham brought his tithe to Melchizedek; by the way, this was before the law was ever instituted. This teaching of Melchizedek is solid food, it is for mature believers.
Hebrews 5:10-12 NKJV of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”
Baby Christians don’t understand Melchizedek what he represents or tithing because tithing is tied up with the Melchizedek Priesthood. When we tithe we must tithe by revelation not obligation. Mature people understand, Tithing is ordained by God to bless them, it is God’s way. Immature baby Christians think, oh the preacher is only after my money. Tithing is solid food teaching for mature believers not milk for baby believers it is not about the money it is about the principle of putting God first. Let me explain.
Jesus is called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”
Hebrews 7:1-2 NKJV For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,””
Abraham brought a Tithe of all to Melchizedek, King of Salem. Salem means King of Peace, King of Shalom. (Wholeness): Abraham was very rich; he was rich without being stressed. He was happy rich. Wealth, happy riches is in the tithe. The Bible tells us
Genesis 13:2 Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. Just like Abraham brought his tithe to Melchizedek, we today bring our tithe to Jesus. Today Jesus is the High Priest according the order of Melchizedek. He is our King of Salem, King of Shalom, wholeness, nothing missing broken or lacking.
Hebrews 7:17 For He testifies: “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”
What did Melchizedek do in the Bible, only two things? He brought out bread and wine, he served communion, and he received Abraham’s tithe and blessed Him. What does our heavenly Melchizedek, Jesus do? He was the bread and the wine, His body was the bread and His blood the wine, and still today He receives our tithes and blesses us. Hebrew 7:8 NKJV Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. (Present tense, Jesus is still receiving Tithes)
Our tithe is a witness that Jesus lives. How does it do that? You will be so blessed that the world asks, why are you so blessed, and you will say, look at what the Lord has done.
So how do you bring your tithe to Jesus? Do you throw it up in the air and say Lord take what is yours that which stays up there is yours, that which comes down is mine. No, you bring it to the storehouse. Jacob vowed to give a tithe of all the benefits that God gave to him.
Genesis 28:22 NKJV And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
Jacob set up the pillar at Bethel which means “House of God”. The tithe is for the local church -You don’t eat at McDonald’s and pay at KFC. The tithe belongs to God; we bring it to Jesus at the local church. Your tithe is not for the Salvation Army, or bread on wheels or the SPCA, God said bring it to the storehouse, the local church.Whatever else you give to the poor, or welfare organisations is either alms, or seed. Wealth and riches, is in the tithe when we bring it to the storehouse, the church. We are the seed of Abraham; the same blessing that worked in Abraham’s life is working in ours. Will you bring your Tithe to the storehouse?
William Colgate, the founder of “Colgate”, met a Christian man who told him to make soap that had great value – the Christian told him to put the best ingredients inside, and to honor and respect God, because of that conversation, William Colgate honored God by being a tither. William Colgate was very blessed and near the end of his life, he was tithing almost a hundred percent of his income.
James Kraft, the founder of “Kraft”, was a tither too. Near the end of his life, he was tithing almost a hundred percent of his income too.
John Henry Heinz, the founder of “Heinz”, was a tither too. Near the end of his life, John was tithing almost a hundred percent of his income as well.
– Sir John Templeton (Wealthy Founder of a huge mutual fund)”In my lifetime of observing many hundreds of families, almost without exception, the family that tithes for more than 10 years becomes both prosperous and happy. This is the one investment suitable for all people.”
John D. Rockefeller (Wealthy Founder of Standard Oil) “I Never Would Have Been Able To Tithe The First Million Dollars I Ever Made If I Had Not Tithed My First Salary, Which Was $1.50 Per Week.”
Just like Rockefeller, you have to start somewhere. It is time we stop trusting the world’s way for blessing, and start trusting God’s way. Let’s put Jesus first in our lives, but let’s also put Him first in our finances.
How to Tithe? I want to teach you how to bring your tithe. If you tithe mechanically that’s not a relationship with God. Tithe out of revelation – God loves a cheerful giver . Don’t let it just go off with a debit order, whenever you tithe, present it to God. It has to be brought. It is all about relationship with God, and putting God first in your finances.Tithing is not about giving money but it is about giving thanks to God for everything He has blessed you with, that’s why the title of my message is thanks bringing, I didn’t say thanksgiving, because we don’t give our Tithe, we bring our tithe. Why do we bring it, and not give it, because it belongs to God?
Leviticus 27:30 NKJV and all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s. It is holy to the LORD.
Deuteronomy 26:1-11 “And it shall be, when you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it 2 that you shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and go to the place where the LORD your God chooses to make His name abide. 3 And you shall go to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come to the country which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.’ 4 “Then the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God. 5 And you shall answer and say before the LORD your God: ‘My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous.6 But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. 7 Then we cried out to the LORD God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. : 8 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders.:9 He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey”;10 and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O LORD, have given me.’ “Then you shall set it before the LORD your God, and worship before the LORD your God. 11 So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the LORD your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.
1) You take the first 10 % of what God blesses you with
2) You take it to the place that God chooses (Not where you think it ought to go)
3) The Priest presents it to God (Jesus Presents its on your part to the Father)
4) We were mistreated by the World, but Jesus brings us out, with with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders
5) He brings us into a land with milk and honey
6) We bring it before God and we worship Him with it.
7) We rejoice over every good thing the Lord has given to our house.
Are you ready to bring thanks and tithe the tithe?
